Key Takeaways
- Those who jump into Concord will find an immersive experience with deep lore and cinematics that ease them into the universe.
- Concord's Galactic Guide provides its readers with information on viable pathways for travel, as well as details about factions and the ongoing revolution within their universe.
- Not only does this in-universe guide function as a tool for the Freegunners, but it is the reason they are being hunted by the antagonistic Guild.
For a multiplayer-focused hero shooter, Concord has some surprisingly deep lore. When jumping into Concord for the first time, players will be presented with an opening cinematic, followed by that week's vignette. These cinematics do a solid job of easing players into Concord's universe, introducing a few characters and key pieces of world-building at a time. But once players are ready to discover everything Concord's universe has to offer, they'll need to head to the Galactic Guide.
Presented as a map of the titular galaxy, Concord's Galactic Guide lets players navigate their way around the game's various planets and starship pathways, with each point of interest providing a brief paragraph or two of lore. With so many points of interest in Concord's Galactic Guide, players will quickly piece together a bigger picture of the game's overarching narrative, and they'll soon realize most of the game's story revolves around two factions. One such faction is the Freegunners, a group of scoundrels and mercenaries, and the faction the player belongs to.

The Lore of Concord's Freegunner Faction Explained
What Is a Freegunner?
As mentioned up top, there are two primary factions in Concord: the Freegunners and the Guild. Originally a group of powerful merchants, the Guild has become the governing body in the Concord galaxy, and to many, they appear as a ruthless regime that specializes in stripping the galaxy of its freedom. The Guild controls the galaxy's space lanes and has created frequent checkpoints on most routes to ensure no unauthorized trading occurs. But the Freegunners have found a way around them.
With the Galactic Guide on their side, Concord's Freegunners are able to access a wealth of hidden pathways spread across the galaxy. These pathways allow the Freegunners to slip past Guild checkpoints undetected, which comes in handy given their line of work. Many Freegunners are smugglers, either stealing the precious Salt Fuel that powers ships' engines to sell it on the black market or stealing sensitive data from the Guild and using it to help the ongoing revolution against the tyrannical faction. But Freegunners will often find themselves competing for the same prize, and when that happens, it's a free-for-all.
The Freegunners' Origins Explained
Many years before the events of Concord's current story, the Guild had complete control over the galaxy, that is until the crew of the Implacable decided to make a name for itself. The very first Freegunners, the Implacable's crew stole the Galactic Guide from the Guild, and rather than sell it for a mint, they decided to release it to the galaxy for free.
Unfortunately, being in possession of the original Galactic Guide caused the Implacable to be at the top of the Guild's most-wanted list, and their pursuit forced the Implacable to come into contact with The Tempest, a gigantic space storm that ripped the galaxy in two years before. The crew of the Implacable is presumed dead, but no one really knows what lies inside The Tempest, and many Freegunners hope they'll appear again one day.
Now, Freegunners use the Galactic Guide to chart their own course through the galaxy. Whenever a new advantageous pathway is discovered, such as the Pirate Pike route through the Glacier Nebula that's filled with Guild mines, or Sladie's Cut that a member of the Implacable first discovered, Freegunners are encouraged to share it with the rest of the faction, keeping them all one step ahead of the enemy.
